FRANKIE MANNING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Sving du Nord is providing the second annual Frankie Manning Memorial Scholarship.

This is an essay contest for high school and college students. Students will write what swing means to them and why they would benefit from attending Sving du Nord. The winner of the essay contest will win a full scholarship to Sving du Nord.

After the passing of Lindy Hop's Ambassador, Frankie Manning, TC Swing wanted a way to commemorate the gift Frankie gave to us and the world by giving that gift to someone who otherwise could not afford to go.

TC Swing must receive your essay by Friday, August 30, 2013, and the winner will be notified by Friday, September 6, 2013.. Essays (electronic media preferred) may be submitted by any one of these methods:

- email to terry@tcswing.com

- mail to: TC Swing, 2261 Lexington Ave N, St Paul, MN 55113

- drop off at any TC Swing class or dance

Instructors!

Sharon Davis

Originally from Perth Australia, Sharon Davis is internationally known for her distinctive and feminine style in Lindy Hop, 1920s Charleston, Blues and Burlesque.

Sharon is now based in London, and travels the world performing and teaching with her dance partner Juan Villafae from Argentina. She holds 1st place titles at the International Lindy Hop Championships, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, National Jitterbug Championships, Canadian Swing Championships, and has claimed numerous other awards internationally.

As an instructor and a DJ, she is known for her dedication to the history of vernacular jazz dances and the music they evolved to. With her bright and bubbly personality, Sharon's teaching style is energetic, creative and fun.

She is also the founder of the annual European Swing Dance Championships.

Nick Williams

Nick Williams has embodied the passion and spirit of swing dancing ever since his first lesson in 1998. The depth of his understanding of Lindy Hop, Balboa, and Collegiate Shag stems from studying with the original dancers. Nick's desire for authenticity, combined with his passion for dance evolution, leads to a style known for precision, lightness, musicality and dynamic energy.

His successes include World Lindy Hop Champion, US Open Swing Dance Champion, American Lindy Hop Champion, National Jitterbug Champion, International Lindy Hop Champion, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown Champion, American Classic Balboa Champion and California Balboa/Swing Champion.

He is also an accomplished choreographer and has been featured on the hit television show So You Think You Can Dance. As an instructor, he is known for his ability to break down movements and technique to create a fun and light-hearted learning environment. His true love of music and dancing will forever inspire him to learn, teach, and grow. In 2004 and 2010, Nick was honored to be recognized by the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame.

Catrine Ljundggren

Catrine learned from Al Minns and Frankie Manning, both members of Whitey's Lindy Hoppers in the 1930's. Catrine is known for her energy; she likes to dance fast and fly high and it is a joy to watch her dancing as she is an excellent performer and dancer. In her dance partner Elliott Donnelley (past Sving du Nord instructor), she has found someone willing to attempt to keep up with her, and they are a joy to watch because they really have fun when they dance.

Chazz Young

Chazz Young, a spectacular dancer with a long and successful stage career, was first inspired by his father, Lindy Hop master Frankie Manning. Today he tours worldwide, spreading the gospel of Lindy Hop and Tap. In addition to his work as a choreographer and performer, he teaches Lindy Hop in his home town of Las Vegas to the most important dancers of today: the young people who are just now learning to dance.
